招生官亲述:20年招生经验,他如何挑选中国学生?

 

我们邀请到了 Winchester Thurston School 温彻斯特瑟斯顿高中(以下简称 WT )的高年级录取主管( Director of Upper School Admission) Scot Lorenzi 来为大家分享美国高中面试的点滴。他已经有超过20年的招生录取工作经验,曾就职于匹兹堡大学录取与助学金部门。Scot将与我们讲述他是如何 挑选中国学生 的。

 

美国高中录取流程、要求和中国高中有很大不同,成绩单不是唯一的考量条件。越来越多的美国高中采取面试的方式来作为最后决定是否录取学生的一个方式,因为面试能够直接了解孩子的兴趣、爱好,看出孩子真实的英语水平和沟通能力。面试无疑是孩子展现自我,向招生官证明自己,增加被学校录取概率的一个有利途径。

WT录取需要提交的材料:

  1. 申请表,学生和家长均需要填写
  2. 学生目前所在学校的成绩单
  3. 两封学生所在学校的老师推荐信,一般是来自数学和英语老师
  4. 语言成绩,一般是托福成绩

提交材料之后,绝大部分孩子都会得到面试机会,因为WT招生官相信面试比纸质上的材料更能看出孩子是否真的适合学校。WT的师资力量很强,当地声誉也很好,所以他们每年都会收到很多国际学生的申请信。这些孩子实力很强,学习成绩好,托福成绩也很高。因为中国学生的学习能力普遍都比较强,成绩单看起来都是非常漂亮的,背景材料也都很相似。招生官Scot主要就是靠面试这个环节去选拔真正想要招收的学生,所以大部分招生官都很看重面试。

 

面试方式

  1. 网络Skype视频面试。
  2. 面对面的面试。

招生官更倾向孩子直接来到WT校园,进行面对面的交流,当然他们也知道国际学生过来美国面试有一定的难度,所以他们也是很乐意接受Skype面试的。

 

面试看什么?

 

1.英语能力。

 

虽然托福成绩可以体现一部分英语能力,但是面试可以看出孩子真正的英语交流沟通和理解能力。

 

Scot一般是通过问孩子问题来判断孩子的英语能力。首先从一些简单的问题开始,比如你都上过哪些课程、谈谈你的家庭、你的家乡等相对简单的问题。招生官主要看孩子能否合理地回答问题以及回答问题的速度。如果孩子回答得好的话,他会慢慢地加大问题难度和加快语速,看孩子是否能够应答如流、需要多长时间来回答问题,以此来判断出孩子真正的英语能力。

 

Scot这么做呢主要是发现对于国际学生来说,留美可能最具挑战的一点是在课堂学习中,孩子很难参与到课堂讨论,也不知道如何合理地记笔记。因为美国这边的课堂与国内不同,并不是老师提出一个问题,学生举手回答。这边是老师提出一个开放性问题,学生之间自己互相讨论。所以他的很多问题也是针对这种况而设计的,为了考察学生在以后的学习中,如果遇到课堂讨论的情况会如何应答。

 

2. 学生能否为学校做出贡献。

 

美国高中跟中国高中区别的一个地方在于,美国学校都很看重学生能够给学校带来哪些贡献,这也是美国学校大部分都很看重“校友”的原因。招生官在面试当中希望了解孩子的兴趣爱好是不是能够给学校增加更多的丰富性,是否有乐于奉献的志愿者精神等等。比如问孩子是否有一些体育特长或者是否擅长某类乐器,以此来看孩子会不会参加学校的体育活动、音乐活动。为了考察这一点,招生官在面试中也会问孩子平时都有哪些课外活动,或者说我们学校开设了活动和组织,你会不会感兴趣参加。通过这一系列的问答来考察学生与学校的氛围、文化是否相符合。

 

像之前跟大家提到的,因为学校本身很优秀,每年都会控制国际学生招生的比例和数量,所以每年开放的席位是有限的。所以在面对这样一群非常有竞争力的学生们,尤其是他们的成绩都很好,背景又非常相似。因此孩子是否能和学校的氛围相符合,就成为非常重要的考量点。

 

3. 孩子对WT是否真正地了解、感兴趣。

 

Scot会考察孩子是否对于他们学校真正感兴趣。他会观察学生是只对WT这一所学校感兴趣还是对于美国其他高中都感兴趣。

 

针对这个问题,老师一般会问学生对于WT这所学校到底了解多少,对于WT所在的匹兹堡地区是否了解。主要是想考察孩子是否认真思考过来我们学校学习、是否是做足功课才来面试,而不是说学生只是过来面试, 但是对于这个学校根本一无所知。

 

招生官提出的这点其实是非常负责任的,因为如果孩子对于这个学校并不了解,他可能连学校开设哪些课程都不知道。过来以后万一发现有些课程并不喜欢,或者学校氛围并不合适,又或者不喜欢学校所在的地理位置就比较难办。所以希望在进入学校前双方能有个互相的了解,招生官也希望能够看到学生是通过仔细的思考之后才决定申请并且希望来我们学校的。

 

这一点招生官本人是非常看重的,他觉得如果学生并没有花时间做功课,说明他并没有对学校那么地感兴趣。那么在招生官做录取选择的时候会更倾向于选择对学校有浓厚兴趣的学生。举个例子,如果A学生的英语成绩一般,但是花了很多功夫去研究WT,表现出了浓厚的兴趣;而B学生英文成绩很好,但是并没有花时间经历去了解他们学校,并没有对他们学校表现出那么浓厚的兴趣。招生官可能就会更倾向于选择录取A而不是成绩优异的B。

 

招生官面试建议

 

1. 孩子自己需要了解申请的学校。

 

不论是通过官网还是一些其他的途径,孩子需要自己去了解申请的学校。很多中国学生的家长可能会对学校很了解,但孩子自己可能并不清楚。但是最后去读书的孩子本人,孩子需要自己去了解这个学校,并且思考自己是否真正想要去这个学校读书。孩子需要问自己一些问题,比如我是否真的想要进入这个学校,我能问这个学校做些什么,我能从这个学校学到什么,我是不是会参加一些学校的公益活动,是不是会参加这个学校的俱乐部,在孩子仔细思考过后会有新的收获,也可以在面试过程中跟招生官去分享这些思考的过程和结果。

 

我们厚仁教育也是一直鼓励家长,不论是申请、还是面试,孩子自己一定要亲自参与进来,这样才能够发现自己是否真的适合这个学校。

 

2. 面试中多问问题。

 

在面试中让孩子多问问题,不一定只是关于学校的问题,也可以是关于学校所在地区的一些问题。比如这所学校所在的匹兹堡地区如何;宾州如何等等。

 

招生官分享说他所遇到的在面试中表现最成功的学生往往都是那些在面试过程中问了招生官很多问题的学生。因为这些孩子通常会与招生官有比较长时间的交流,可以与招生官分享他的一些兴趣爱好,让招生官看到学生身上的闪光点。

 

3. 积极表现、流畅地表达自我。

 

因为国际学生每年申请的人数非常多,但是席位有限,每年的录取率只有25%,所以其实竞争很激烈,也因此每年都会有很多的面试。Scot老师面试过很多的孩子,有些孩子能够给他留下深刻印象,这些孩子也就比较容易成功通过面试。这些孩子的特点就是面试表现很积极,非常地热情、好奇、对学校很感兴趣。因为美国这边很看重孩子的Engagement、Involvement,也就是希望孩子能够积极主动地表现出想要加入这个学校的渴望。另外就是这些孩子能够在面试当中用英文很好地表达自我,不管是回答问题还是问问题。
招生官希望招收来的孩子过来美国,进入学校之后,能够好好的学习,有优秀的学业表现;同时呢能够参与学校的各种活动,为学校做出一些贡献;最终能从学校顺利毕业进入美国这边优秀的大学。
