May the force be with us.  God bless America.

Hi colleagues and students,

I know you must wonder if the US will survive the turmoil.  In my junior year of high school (1963) John F Kennedy was assassinated. In April of 1968,  my senior year of college Martin Luther King was assassinated and then in June of 1968 as I graduated from college Robert Kennedy was assassinated.

The 60’s and into the 70’s were crazy times with high usage of LSD, flower children, communes, many counter culture behaviors and the Vietnam War. Many of our young men died in the war and others to avoid the draft sought refuge by fleeing to Canada. I remember when Timothy Leary, the LSD guru, spoke at  Duquesne University and our President nearly had a stroke. Apparently, Dr. McAnulty had not been informed about this unlikely and unwelcome speaker sponsored by the student government.

But what influenced me the most during those times was the assassination of Martin Luther King. He represented fellowship and espoused equality. The male students at Duquesne wore black armbands and had rallys on behalf of Dr. King. Then the rioting, looting and fire bombing  started. Duquesne University was closed because of its proximity to the Hill District where much of the violence took place. I was student teaching at Larimer School in East Liberty with high school students who were enrolled in Special Education. Going from my home on the southside of the city to East Liberty was frightening as I had to take public transportation. Few city kids had cars. National Guardsmen equipped with riot gear and machine guns were on every corner as well as Pgh police officers.

Eventually Pgh Public Schools closed Larimer as the riots got worse. They were afraid that the dry cleaning plant next to Larimer might be firebombed.

There have been other incidents in the US that have affected my sense of safety and security  such as 911, but none compared to the situations I experienced as a young adult.

Why am I sharing this with you? Don’t give up on the US. Although we have an element of truly evil people in our midst, there are many good people. In the 60’s and the 70’s our country eventually returned to domestic peace.  Lyndon Johnson lead the war on poverty and the Vietnam War ended. Although there have been may incidents of racism and unrest, I still believe in the US. It is a democracy and the founders developed guidelines that represent good practices. Sometime this country strays but it will survive and again be a haven for all people, all cultures and all races.

Since I am much older than all of you I thought I’d share these thoughts and experiences as I lived through those  difficult  times. Stay safe, try to be positive. We’ll all get through this.

Best,

Kathy White
