雪城大学本硕连读：工程/计算机科学和MBA

Syracuse Quick Facts

Through one of my admissions contacts, I recently learned about the Dual Engineering/Computer Science MBA Degree Program at Syracuse University.  With just under 15,000 students, Syracuse is ranked #59 in National Universities by U.S. News and World Report, ranked #3 with USA Today/College Factual 2020 Best Colleges for Entrepreneurial Studies, and the MBA Program was ranked #77 by U.S. News & World Report 2021.  Do not let these numbers fool you though, the average alumni of the MBA program earns $85,000 – $118,000 a year (depending on the source you review).  Keep in mind this is for the MBA alone, without the Engineering/Computer Science degree also added into the equation.  Graduates from this program possess a combination of skills that combine “engineering expertise to develop technological innovations and business knowledge to put ideas into action”.

Value of Dual Degrees

“The H. John Riley Dual Engineering/MBA Program is a leadership development Program that gives Syracuse University students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree from the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and an MBA degree from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.”

A dual degree program is often referred to as a 3+2 program, with three years focusing on undergraduate work and 2 years on the graduate program.  Students in the dual degree program will earn both a Bachelors of Science in Engineering/Computer Science and an MBA degree in five years, reducing time to enter the workforce (along with costs associated with a four year degree plus a 2 year MBA).  Recent notable employers for MBA graduates include: Amazon, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Merck, Tesla and KPMG. For the Class of 2020, 87% of candidates accepted a position within 3 months of graduation. Per Forbes Magazine, the decline in MBA jobs (34%) was greater than the decline in overall jobs (27%) for the period between May 2019 and May 2020, making Syracuse’s 87%  job rate optimistic for its graduates. The dual degree program is not only fiscally wise, but also provides more professional options in times of pandemic-driven uncertainty.

Dual Engineering/Computer Science – MBA Program Curriculum

Per the Syracuse website, graduate coursework begins in the junior year:

Application Process

As a high school senior, students would apply to student Engineering or Computer Science at Syracuse and at the end of their sophomore year at Syracuse, be eligible to apply for the Dual Degree program (deadline in mid-April). Admission will depend upon their undergraduate academic record, GMAT or GRE (cost reimbursed if a student is accepted and enrolls in the MBA program), and other application materials. Students are admitted to the program with the understanding that they are on track for a five-year dual degree. Summary

Earning a dual degree takes perseverance and hard work. However, in a time of uncertainty when it comes to employment — and for international students, concerns about visa sponsorship, having two degrees theoretically means graduates will have twice the number of potential jobs they are qualified for thus widening their options for a career path in the U.S. The coursework is not necessarily harder in a dual degree program but given the time is shortened to five years, well organized, high achieving students are more likely to succeed given the program may require taking more than the usual courseload each semester and require summer studies.
