Tsinghua International School

Overview

Tsinghua International School (THIS) is a full-time international school of great environment and facilities. Located opposite to Yuanming Yuan (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), THIS takes pride in its campus, which is on the grounds of the 100-year-old well-known Tsinghua University High School.

Established in March 2009, Tsinghua International School is an integration of Chinese and Western education and culture. The school aims to provide the education that introduces the western education philosophy with acculturation. THIS has the primary, middle and high school and currently we have more than 400 students. Our students come from more than 20 countries and regions including US, UK and Canada.

The curriculum applied in THIS refers to the course framework in the States and the Chinese culture related courses are also included. The full-English environment could help to contribute a great improvement for the language development. Moreover, we have the Chinese study as our core course that can guarantee the Chinese level and the exploration of Chinese traditional culture with Tsinghua spirit. The education accomplishment of THIS has gained a wide recognition from the parents and the society.

Our graduates successfully obtained the offers from top universities all over the world, including Harvard University, Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Cornell University, University of Toronto and University of London. The dedicated faculty, activate and creative students, fair and harmonious environment and the unique school culture altogether provide an excellent platform for every student.

THIS became an accredited institution with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in January 2016. Tsinghua International School now becomes one of the six WASC accredited schools in Beijing, and the only accredited international school affiliated with a public school.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Tsinghua International School is a three part process. Students are required to have adequate grades from their previous school, pass a math test as well as an academic English exam and complete an interview in English. The overwhelming majority of our students come with some level of Chinese language ability, but it is not required. All students must have a valid, international passport to attend the school.

Language Study

All secondary students at THIS undertake advanced study in both English and Chinese. The school’s language of instruction is English, and students who are below required proficiency levels in English take our regular courses, but also additional language support courses to improve their academic English. Once students have shown mastery of academic English, they are no longer required to take the additional courses. In Chinese language, we offer courses for both first and second language speakers. For students who are native speakers of Chinese, the curriculum is similar to that in a Chinese national school, with advanced work in history and literature to develop reading, writing and public speaking skills. Courses for native speakers are denoted with an “A” on the transcript. Chinese for second language learners also involves high-level work, with the goal of preparing students to master linguistic skills and prepare to read advanced literature. Courses for second language learners are denoted with a “B” on the transcript. Beyond the Chinese program, we currently offer introductory and intermediate classes in Spanish and French.

Grading Scale

Students are graded on a 60-100 scale in each of their classes. All classes are counted towards their GPA. THIS gives an additional .5 weighting for all passing AP grades. The school has one standard of grading independent of language ability. Students who have one failing grade or below a 2.0 GPA for any semester are put on Academic Probation. Those students are restricted from participation in extracurricular activities. Students who are on Academic Probation for more than one semester will have their status at the school reviewed at the end of the year.
